Lots of questions rolling in to my email about how Anteries Daniels' new single-game rushing record in Nebraska’s A classification stacks-up against the best of all-time. The Omaha Northwest High senior rushed for 410 yards in his team’s season finale two weeks ago against Omaha Benson.
First, Daniels came-up four yards short of the 11-man record of 414 yards set in 2004 by Brett Gumb. However, when you put Daniels under a national scope, you’ll find that, he didn’t even come close to breaking into the Top 10.
The National Federation of State High School Associations is the keeper of all that is high school sports records. Below are some sobering stats on the best-ever single game performances by high school players running the ball.
The best of the best is Johnny Giannantonio of Netcong, New Jersey, who back in 1950 rushed for 754 yards in a game! Even more amazing according to the NFHS record book is that he averaged 594.5 yards per game during the season.
Here’s the Top 10 all-time best single game performances:
754 Yards – Johnny Giannantonio (Netcong, NJ) vs. Mountain Lakes, 1950
661 Yards – Paul McCoy (Matewan, WV) vs. Delbarton Burch, WV Sept. 29, 2006
